APIS IT modernizes with Adriatic Region’s first Red Hat OpenShift implementation

Overview

To improve agility, ensure compliance, and better recommend innovative IT initiatives to improve internal and citizen-facing experiences, APIS IT needed to modernize its legacy systems. Using Red Hat OpenShift and a collaborative DevOps approach, the government entity migrated to a centralized application development environment. Now it can work more efficiently to develop and deploy new service applications in compliance with European Union (EU) regulations, as well as attract skilled talent.

Challenge

Modernize legacy IT to enhance public services

APIS IT works with government ministries, public administration bodies, and utilities providers across the Republic of Croatia to plan for and provide critical IT infrastructure. To support this work and ensure compliance with EU regulations, APIS IT realized it needed to modernize its legacy systems. It sought to create a single, centralized platform to connect its modern technology with its diverse existing infrastructure, some of which included older frameworks and programming languages.

Solution

Migrate applications to a diverse IT environment

Using Red Hat OpenShift Data Foundation, APIS IT migrated 2 decades of legacy systems it had adopted over the past 20 years—including enterprise JavaTM and Microsoft .NET frameworks—to a centralized open source platform to ease integration and avoid vendor lock-in. It now runs 80+ production projects on OpenShift, with plans to migrate an additional 200+ Java applications and adopt both Red Hat Advanced Cluster Security for Kubernetes and Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management for Kubernetes.

Business outcome

Improve support, compliance through IT modernization

Standardizing application life cycle management with Red Hat OpenShift has helped APIS IT’s teams adopt a responsive, efficient DevOps work approach. Formerly isolated developers and operations staff can now collaborate in a consistent infrastructure environment, with user-friendly dashboards that provide transparent visibility into projects. With 2 decades of legacy systems already migrated, APIS IT now plans to expand its Red Hat portfolio to further enhance management and security.
